India–Indonesia LDR Tips from a Couple Who Lasted 3 Years

I'm Dini, my husband Rajesh. We met at college in Bandung in 2022. He went back to Pune in 2023. We're still LDR waiting for the visa.

3 years isn't short. Many break up in the first year. Here's what kept us together — not motivation, but daily things.

1. The 1.5 hour time difference is a blessing.
WIB is 1.5 hours ahead of IST. When I wake at 6, he's at 4:30 — we never video call in the morning. But when I sleep at 11 PM, he's still at 9:30 — that's our golden hour. Never skip.

2. Send small things, don't wait for big moments.
I once sent him 1 Silverqueen chocolate bar + handwritten letter. Total Rp 180k. He cried harder than when I sent Rp 1 million hampers on Diwali. What he remembered wasn't the price — but "why on a regular Tuesday did you send something?"

3. Learn your partner's language, even a little.
I learned Hindi 15 min/day with Duolingo. He learned Indonesian. When he first said "aku sayang kamu" not "I love you", I cried immediately.

4. Have a "no partner" day.
Every Sunday afternoon I don't chat him. I meet friends, or alone in a cafe. At first he was mad. Now he has his own day too. Relationships need space.

5. Plan to meet in person at least 2x a year.
Jakarta–Mumbai ticket Rp 4–6 million round trip if booked far ahead. We split it. Once I go there, once he comes here. What he waits for isn't video calls — it's the smell of my hair.

6. Send photos, not just text.
Food photos, sky photos, neighbor's cat photos. Doesn't have to be pretty. What matters is he feels "in" your life.

7. Fighting is okay too.
We didn't speak for 3 days because he forgot anniversary. But we always come back. LDR that never fights is actually weird — means something is bottled up.

If you're also in an India–Indonesia LDR, send something today. Not tomorrow. Not on his birthday. Today. That's what he'll remember 10 years from now.
